Barely a week after the announcement that we’d like to have someone new take over the majority of hosting duties for Fly Reckless, we’re all suddenly inundated with responses. As such, we wanted to post a response to the general public.

First and foremost, our thanks to all of you who’ve responded with interest in applying for the role of host, and to everyone who’s just voice moral support (and to Jade who told us to stop over extending ourselves. Thanks Jade!)

Second, YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG.

Actually you’re not, but we would like to lay down some guideline we didn’t think we’d actually need. If you’d like to become part of Fly Reckless, please send us the following:

Your public character name (with apologies to Paul the Griefer), and what you want us to call you on air.

Your Skype name.

A few sentences on your life as an EVE player. Please, no more than a paragraph.

Finally, and most importantly, a 2-3 minute recording of yourself talking about EVE. This could be anything from you rambling on off the cuff to a discussion of someone else’s EVE related blog. Please don’t send us direct readings of blogs.

Please send all of the above to Angus.Reckless@gmail.com AND PK.Reckless@gmail.com If you only email one or the other of us, we’ll have to forward it to each other and then we’ll get all grumpy about it. Also, please DON’T email Chad. Bear in mind that Fly Reckless is still owned by Chad, but he stepped back from the mic for a reason. PK and Angus will do the heavy lifting, then go to him for final approval. He still welcomes general fan mail, provided they include at least a PLEX or something.

We’re kidding about the PLEX.

Just as we were about to go into it all, the boys from EVE Commune suddenly crashed our studio and got us completely off track.

For the record: yes, there have been some tensions between our two shows. We’re working towards a peaceful resolution, but feelings remain strong (if amicable) on both sides. Also, Angus needs to lay off the sauce but refuses to apologize for his actions.

As many of you know, Fly Reckless’ Cohost Lobos has been living near Tokyo for a while, and so the recent disaster has struck very close to home for all of us at the show. While he regrets being unable to join us at this time, Lobos and his family are safe, and he has sent us a letter describing the situation which we will read to you shortly.

“Greetings from afar,

As many of you know in the past few days the events that have unfolded are unprecedented in the history of our world. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake shook the people in Northeast Japan followed by a massive series of water surges called Tsunami, which washed away homes, cars, trains, and much of the earth itself.

The death toll continues to rise as rescue teams and responders tirelessly work to find survivors, recover and identify remains. Now Japan is facing a nuclear crisis. Several of Japan’s nuclear power plants are having trouble maintaining a stable core temperature. The containment vessel at the Fukashima Daiichi Power plant is suspected to be compromised and could be leaking radiation at an alarming rate.

Survivors are struggling to locate food, water, and shelter. This is only the beginning. The world has sprung into action as 69 countries have committed assets to assist in the Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief. The problem that we face is a complex one growing more complex with time. Not only are survivors of the quake and tsunami at risk due to food and water shortages as well as facing the elements, but Japan as a whole is faced with nuclear fallout and risk of radiological contamination.

Angus and I have been in contact throughout and has told me of those voicing their concern for me. I am alive and well. If many of you remember I am serving on board USS Blue Ridge, which was recently depicted on the news on-loading a HADR (Humanitarian Aid/ Disaster Relief) Kit.

If anyone wishes to help please pray for those in Japan as well as those who have gone to her aid.

As some of you may know, I’ve been taking up the art of combat photography in EVE recently. Mostly that means I show up to fleet fights completely unarmed with my graphics set to 11.

Most times, it’s all excitement and really awesome shots.

Sometimes, it’s hurry up and wait. You should never leave a group of capsuleers to their own devices for too long.

I didn’t figure most of what follows was worth submitting to EON, ihavereturned.com or any of those ‘reputable’ news sources, so here you are, just for laughs with special thanks to the FCORD Anti Sansha fleet:

The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! This months topic comes to us from @evepress, who he asks: The CSM: CCP’s Meta Game? The CSM, an EVE players voice to CCP. Right? In the grand scheme of things yes, the players bring up issues and the CSM presents them to CCP. But in its current iteration the CSM was supposed to be given small authority to assign CCP assets to projects that the CSM thought needed work on. As it has come out, this was not the case. So fellow bloggers, is the CSM worth it, has the CSM improved the game in any way, or is it just a well thought out scam by CCP to give us players a false sense of input in the game? What’s your take?

So why all of a sudden am I participating in the Blog Banter? Why the hell should anyone give two shits what I think about it? Well, I’m guessing it’s because I can’t sleep and if you don’t care about my immeasurable insights into the CSM, then stop reading.

The CSM is a good thing. Well, let me elaborate on that a little bit. The IDEA of the CSM is a good thing, the execution of it is another thing entirely. What we have here is a fledgling organization that is still trying to find its way in the world. Nobody else has done ANYTHING like this before and it’s unfair of us as players to think that there won’t be bumps and bruises to the process, the egos, and the very fabric of EVE itself.

While I don’t have any hard facts to back up my statements, I do know from personal experience that blazing a trail is never an easy thing and I would be quite surprised if peoples often unrealistic expectations of how things are “supposed to be” lived up to the reality of this very ambitious and progressive project/endeavor.

To be honest I’m stunned that CCP is doing this at all. Ask any other game designer to do something like this and I’m sure you’ll be told politely that it’s a “good idea” and they will “consider it”, but I’d bet you every ISK in my wallet, and every ship in my hangar that nothing would come of it.

I’m always entertained by those who criticize without coming up with a better option and then DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. In my opinion if you haven’t served on a CSM you really have no business bitching or complaining at all. If you see something wrong, get up off your ass and DO SOMETHING to make it better. The people who have served on the CSM have given up a lot more of their time and effort than any ticket to Iceland is worth, so PLEASE stop using that as a motivation for those serving on the CSM.

I have hope and faith and here is why: The people serving on the CSM and the people at CCP who sponsor and participate want to make EVE better. They want this game, this environment, this community to grow and become bigger and better than any of us currently imagine. We all want EVE to become something more and we are all working towards the same goal. The place where we differ, is how to get from where we are today, to that amazing greatness of tomorrow.

Things WILL change, things HAVE changed as a result of the CSM. Hell, they got me a skill queue and if they never do anything else they can ride that win for quite a while in my book.

Hulkageddon – My thoughts

So it was asked by hulkageddon sponsors: “Do events like Hulkageddon do more to improve the game or hurt from the game?”

Here’s my thoughts on the matter.

We play EVE. EVE is a vicious, cruel place where there are acts of kindness and acts of remorseless vengeance that play out on a daily basis (very similar to the real world). This is part of what makes EVE the game that it is today. It’s a sandbox environment and you don’t have GM’s enforcing certain rules about what’s “moral” or “ethical” (other than RMT) and they pretty much let us kids loose in the sandbox… Where we promptly choose to throw sand at each other, and swing little plastic pails around hoping to bonk the other kids in the nose to make them cry sweet sweet tears.

This is the beauty that is EVE and the hulkageddon event is simply a more organized way for us kids to throw sand at one another. It’s what makes EVE great and if you don’t like it, get the hell out of the sandbox and go crying to your mother while the rest of us laugh our asses off.

I was listening to a podcast today about Servers/Virtualization/Storage/Cloud/etc (because that’s the industry I’m in) and heard about a little bruhaha between a blogger, Cisco and Gartner. How can a BLOGGER get the attention of such lumininaries as Cisco and Gartner? Apparently you just have to say the wong thing at the wrong time.

In a nutshell this guy (www.ViewYonder.com) posted this blog about some opinions of FCoE (Fiber Channel over Ethernet) that came out as part of a Gartner paper and Gartner got ahold of it, found out that this guy worked for Cisco and proceeded to put the screws to Cisco to get this guy to lay off their precious papers.

That’s right, a guy writing about his own opinion (who happened to work for Cisco) was catching heat from his employers for a blog. Eventually Cisco stood behind their employee, but not after a fair bit of sweating and nervousness on the part of ol Steve Chambers. The post is off his site by the way.

Why am I talking about this?

I think it’s important for people to understand that in this great, wonderful blogosphere and world of social networking, there are real ramifications to speaking your mind and that what you do, and what you say can have both a very good impact on you personally as well as a very bad impact… that and I almost started a blog about virtualization and VMware, and at this point am very glad I didn’t.

After a week of putzing around I’ve made the jump into a new part of Eve that I’ve never played with before. Wormholes.

Many of you will probably groan, but I’ve been taking a break from Eve for a while and needed a significant change of pace to re-invigorate me and to drag me back into the game. So I’ve joined up with a wormhole corp and started moving into W-Space. So far I’ve learned a lot of new things and really had a great time. The people are fun, very organized and there’s things to get involved with even if I’m on for just a short time.

I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of me in the next few weeks.

Well I just got it in the mail and I must say that it’s quite the nice hunk of glass. It’s beautiful and will be going on my desk at work. Not with all my other toys that sit on my desk, but somewhere where people can look at it and not mess with it. It’s heavy enough that if someone dropped it it could easily break and as far as I’m concerned it’s irreplaceable.

I must say that I am quite humbled by the award and feel very honored that you’ve chosen me (the podcast) as the most promising newcomer. While I always hoped I’d win, I never thought it would have actually happened.

Thank you to everyone who voted for me, I really REALLY appreciate your support.

I’m on hiatus from EVE for the moment. Yes I know the patch came out and it’s cool and exciting, and.. But I’ve gotten sucked into a different game right now.
